27th August - Specialisation

We had the pleasure of meeting up with my old off-sider Eliza from the LIV today at her new job for The Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet. A fancy title for a professional association of lawyers who are interested in introducing a specialisation scheme. She was poached from us after her new manager spent a week at the LIV on a fact finding mission.

Eliza at her desk

The Signet was first used in 1369 but the society did not take definite shape until 1594 (although they trace their history further back) whilst their building in just under 200 years old. It has about 1000 members and 10 staff.

Eliza and a visitor in the library

As you can see from the photos it’s an old and spectacular building inside. One of the books behind Eliza’s desk contains documents from 1745!

22 August - Edinburgh Festival News

We spent the last few days in London catching up with some family and friends.

On Thursday we caught up with Alice (a friend of Tahnees) who Tam spoke to about entering the recruitment field four years ago. Lovely girl but I was surprised she was happy to catch up as she was still in recruitment (I don't think Tam would recomend the industry to anyone now)! On Thursday afternoon we caught up with Leon and Jean (Rebecca's in-laws) in Covent Garden for traditional English afternoon tea. They dropped off our UK mobile and Tam is feeling much better as she is now 'contactable'.

Leon is a professional artist and you can see his current work at http://www.openeyegallery.co.uk/artist.php?artist=Leon%20Morrocco%20ARSA%20RGI&Gallery=Open%20Eye

We then caught up with my cousin Rob who has been in the UK and Copenhagen for the past 3 years. We met at Putney and had a pint (I didn't finish it) and then tapas. A great night with a cousin I don't see often enough. He's keen to get back to Melbourne for all of you IT recruiters. He's had seven years SAP project experience with PWC and IBM.

Our last day we started early and went to Portobello Road market before meeting up with Anne (from Julia Ross Melbourne) who is looking for work in London for a few months. Suprisingly she lives in Putney so we met in the same area as the night before.

We arrived in Edinburgh yesterday and have a great apartment right in the centre of town (off Grassmarket). A big improvement from our shoebox in London.

We saw Cabaret Decadanse last night (puppetry in the form of 20's Paris caberet) which was fantastic and a not so good show called School Ties (uni review standard) so our strike rate is 50%.

Off to the Tattoo tonight.

17th August - London Calling

Our flight out of Australia started uneventfully until we arrived in Singapore. At 12 midnight our plane touched down and we were advised that on our next leg to London (14 hours) that there would be no in-flight catering due to the ongoing catering strike.

We were all given 25 singapore dollars to buy food at the airport to take on board. The only problem was there were 300 other passengers searching for food at the airport in the middle of the night and we only had 45 mins before re-boarding, rather than the 2 hours we thought.

The flight eventually arrived in London with a lot of tired passengers who were happy to leave the flight behind them.

Uppon arrival in London, we found our accommodation and had 4 hours to kill before we could enter the room.

We started off walking to Notting Hill (we are in Bayswater) before the shops had opened to have a look around and just wander the streets.

We then headed down to Kensington/Chelsea area through Hyde Park.

We continued our aimless wandering and can across the Michelin Bibendum (near Sloane Square) which was a fantastic building housing a nice liitle coffee bar and a Terence Conran Shop. We rested our weary feet and I will go back during our stay to take some pictures for those who are interested in architecture.

We wandered some more before we found Harrods where we looked at the overpriced clothes (Vivien Westwood wasn't on sale). Lunched ended up being upmarket Lebanese in Harrods which was £28 for three mezze plates, bottled water and a beer (they did supply a plate of lettuce, carrot, lebanese cucumber, small radiches and a small chilli on the table as a refresher).

After lunch, we wandered back to Bayswater to enter our shoebox (I mean hotel room). The room is so small, Mark can sit on the toilet whilst washing his feet in the shower and brushing his teeth at the sink at the same time.

We fell asleep at 5pm after walking for 6 hours (longer than our expected 4 hours).

We awoke nice and early 5.30am (I hope Tam learns to sleep in during the trip) and set forth on one of the tourist double decker buses (just to see the sights). Parliament House, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and everything else is still in the same spot it was 15 years ago when we last visited. Part of the trip also included a walking tour so we took the Beatles walk through Soho.

Tuesday night we went the see Chicago at the West End (Adelphi Theatre) before retiring to bed exhausted.

Today we are off to lunch at the Savoy Grill (A one Michelin starred restaurant owned by Gordon Ramsay). http://www.gordonramsay.com/site/index.html

We almost forgot, it's been 26 degrees each day and they are expecting it to reach 28 by the end of the week. Go figure!

Till next time, don't forget to write us.
