30 April - Is it Duck Season? No it's Wedding Season

Well it's been a frantic but entertaining 6 weeks with many special occasions including 4 weddings, a 40th birthday, 4 films and 11 shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

First Wedding - Tyson & Marnie

We had a wonderful afternoon of sunshine in the Botanical Gardens for a beautiful Jewish wedding. With more than 200 guests, it was one of the biggest weddings I've ever attended and lots of fun. We walked to The Observatory Cafe where I discovered that Pitzi, the Austrian cafe owner, was still in charge of this cafe/ restaurant. Pitzi had actually catered for our wedding 10yrs ago!

We started off with the classic Jewish dancing almost before the first glass of bubbles arrived. Everyone got involved and it really revs up the crowd. All about were smiles of faces (of those dancing, and those on the sidelines!)

Even though he didn't want to, the boys picked up Tyson on the traditional chair and carried him in the dancing guys for a few mins.

Following about 20-mins of dancing, we had canapes and bubbles as the sun set and then the older generation headed indoors to sit down, whilst the youngees sat down outside under the outdoor heaters.

They had wonderful and amusing speeches and with beautiful food, finished the night (a Sunday night) around 1am!

Second Wedding - Chris & Veronique

The next wedding, only 6 days later was a very different affair. Set at the spectacular Xavier cathedral, with the late afternoon sun beaming up the stained glass, although it had been squally and drizzling for a good part of the early afternoon! Guests were worried about their planned spaghetti strap dresses without jackets and open toed sandals! The photo shoot with all the guests on the cathedral steps was lovely but I think people wanted to get to their cars quickly!

That night the wedding celebrations were at Circa, The Prince on the upstairs balcony and in the main room. It was lovely there and it felt quite cosy with 80 guests. The food was of course, amazing and lived up to reputation.

With a collection of very well-spoken family members and friends, the speeches were quite engaging! We had a bit of dancing afterwards.

Third Wedding - Andrew & Sally

The following wedding was one of Mark's cousins. After more threats of rain throughout the forecast period, we missed everything until 5-mins before the bride was meant to show up. Even with a post-Easter wedding, you can still expect (on occasions) to have reasonable weather, although there had not been any contingency plans for rain! The ceremony was on the bluff at Beaumaris Yacht Club which is stunning and we had the sunset to follow. And becuase of the light rain, which fell for only 10 mins approx, we even got a rainbow!

After moving gratefully into the Yacht club itself, we watched the end of a Carlton football match on TV (they actually won!) before going up to the main dining room. The wedding was a classic affair with amusing band playing the old favourites and nice speeches from the fathers and the bridal table.

Fourth Wedding - Lillian & Rod

The final wedding was both nerve-wracking and a relief as we knew the end was in sight. It was worrying for us becuase we were given the honour of actually acting as joint MC's for the afternoon. This started with us taking a bus with 15 of the 45 guests from Spencer St station at 9.45am on a Sunday morning, immediately after leaving the 3rd wedding the Saturday night!

But we take our responsibilities seriously and managed to get everyone on the bus and we finally got there about 11.45am for the surprisingly sunny and mild day. The ceremony was very moving and Lillian and a few of the guests, myself included, were teary. The walk for Lillian and her father was probabl;y the longest in history and searching for the right music was tricky. They settled on a beautiful piece called The Nutcracker suite (which gave me fond memories from ballet dancing days).

After fruit punch / bubbles and canapes in the courtyard, we moved into the LIndenderry private double room and started proceedings. A few shaking hands the first time and then we settled into our duties. It went off very smoothly and the speeches were so emotional that Rod couldn't finish but Lillian, ever the partner, picked up the slack!

We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed meeting their families from North Qld and Chile, amongst other places. We snuck a lift home with one of the Rod's old workmates, Catherine and felt very full from all the extraordinary food, wine and desserts over the past weekend and past month and decided that renewed efforts at the gym were in order for the few weeks ahead.
