February 2007
Well February has flown by and we're already half way through March - scary stuff!
After returning from Vietnam, we both jumped straight into manic situations at work. Mark had committee meetings every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night for the whole month (which will continue until Easter time) and I came back to a crazy few weeks at work.
I have one staff member who is new to recruitment and one new staff member who is an experienced recruiter but new to the company. We also had our Annual Conference 2 weeks after I returned which was coming into crunch zone. We got on top of everything and the team is gelling well, which is great. The Conference was exhausting but very valuable for all of us I think and has inspired me forwards.
Mark also had some interesting changes in his work - his boss of the last 3 yrs resigned to take on a new challenge. Mark realised he's never had a new boss start whilst he's been in a role! I find that astounding as that's happened in nearly every role I've had in the last 10yrs! No, he's not intending to go for the job and Yes that was the first thing I thought to ask him.
In amongst all of this work stuff, we also hosted 3 of our travel companions from the Vietnam trip in our home in Melbourne. We had great fun with Nora on 2 occasions and also hosted Suzanne and Duncan for 2 nights. With Nora, we saw the cool bars (Croft Institute, Section 8, Murmur) and a Melbourne food institution (Italian Waiters Club). With Suzanne & Duncan, we had intended to go to Rockpool but it was booked out and so we ended up at 'The Italian' off Flinders Lane for a lovely meal (including spectacular vitello limone and a melt in the mouth steak) and then went to the Deanery (another great Melbourne bar).
I know Nora really enjoyed her time in Melbourne, just hanging out and experiencing a top class kitchen like Ezard's (part of Adelphi Hotel, Flinders Lane) where we managed to get her a volunteer gig. Nora is a chef from Norway and did a volunteer stint in Ho Chi Minh city for 2 weeks before joining our Intrepid tour). Suzanne & Duncan also commented on how much they liked Melbourne. It might, however, have had something to do with finally attending the Neighbours Trivia Night at the Elephant & Wheelbarrow Hotel in St Kilda and going on a day trip to the filming set. Also, Duncan's excellent rendition of 'God Save the Queen' won them a bus and accomodation trip to Sydney via Canberra, which unfortunately they couldn't use or sell!
We also saw a number of films during the month including 'To Sir with Love' at Rooftop Cinema (great film and a gorgeous night), 'Perfume' (an amazing book and very visual and wonderful film), 'The Illusionist', not Ed Norton's best work and 'Man of the Year' (a surprisingly good and thought-provoking film with Robin Williams). We had also intended to join in the throng at Sidney Myer Music Bowl for Tropfest but we had our one and only day of rain in February in Melbourne 3000 and it poured down on the day/ night for about 4 hrs which made it useless to go the outdoor screening. Luckily, through The Age newspaper, we got the DVD of all the finalists about 1 week later.
Til next month's entry - keep smiling and fingers crossed for more rain.
